If there is a lump, or trouble swallowing

Do not wait for a routine appointment. A firm lump in the neck or under the jaw that is not symmetrical with the other side, a swelling that is growing, a change in voice, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing, or a jaw that will not open normally needs medical assessment, and in some cases urgent care, rather than a cosmetic consultation. Say what you are feeling when you call, so that the right clinic sees you.

Arranging an ordinary assessment

Where the complaint has been present and stable, appointments are made through the hospital outpatient line or through the appointment service described on the appointments page. Say when booking that the question is about the jawline or the neck, and if you are travelling from outside Chongqing, say so, because the examination and any imaging can sometimes be arranged across fewer visits.

What to bring

Bring any previous treatment to the area and when it was done, any dental or orthodontic treatment you have had or are having, a list of your current medicines and allergies, and the names of any conditions you are being treated for. If you grind your teeth, if your jaw clicks or aches, or if you have been told you snore heavily, bring that as well, because each of them changes what the assessment looks at first.

What happens at the consultation

Expect an examination rather than a presentation. The bone is assessed for width at the angle and for how the chin and lower jaw project, the bite is looked at, the muscles are examined at rest and while clenching, the fat under the chin is examined as two compartments rather than one, and the skin of the neck is assessed for how well it recoils. You should leave knowing which layer is responsible, what each option would change, what each would leave alone, and which guide answers your particular version of the problem.

Questions without booking

Questions about the content of this site, including any correction you believe should be made to it, are welcome through the hospital administration line. Clinical questions about your own jawline are best answered in person, and we will say so rather than guess.
